I am always on the lookout for beach destinations. Of course, what do you expect from an island girl who was born and thrown into the water, right? I often get asked why I ever decided to move to Asia and the answer is as simple as that – the warm weather and the islands!

Southeast Asia boasts some of the most beautiful islands in the whole world (according to me and many more) and I tend to forget that Malaysia itself counts many gems that look like they’re straight out of a postcard! While some of the more pristine ones sit along the coast of Johor, Malaysia’s island big-hitter remains …*drumroll*…. Langkawi!

The island delivers eye candy galore with sprawling white-sand beaches and turquoise ocean (if you know where to look)! I mean, Langkawi is almost synonymous to Malaysia; right after the Twin Towers, no?!

Deemed as the Bali of Malaysia, Langkawi has long been known for its backpacker scene (ahem, blame it on the several hostels and guesthouses along Cenang Beach), but did you know that parts of the island could well be romantic and hidden away from the rowdy crowd? In fact, my first couple vacation in Malaysia was to Langkawi and fast forward to 6 years later, we still talk about it!

4. Fancy a romantic jacuzzi sesh with a view? – Berjaya Langkawi Resort

Over 5 years ago, I gifted my boyfriend tickets to Langkawi on his birthday; being a student at that time, I could not really afford buying us both tickets to a destination out of Malaysia but nevertheless, I can assure you that this first trip we took together was not less memorable.

The highlight of this vacation was of course, our stay! We had booked ourselves the stunning Berjaya Langkawi Resort and fast forward to now, I wish I could simply go back to spend the night in their overwater premier suite this time!

And though I had previously been to Langkawi, this was a completely different side of the island. It was peaceful, away from the loud beach shacks on Cenang Beach and I was so glad we opted for something different and quieter. And that does not mean you’ll be restricted from all the fun as there’s a bunch of sea activities offered by the resort.

Not saying that I do not like a little party but sometimes, the two of you just want some peace and romance and you get just that at Berjaya Langkawi Resort, with a beautiful stretch of beach, from which you can admire amazing sunsets and cute otters making their way back to the nearby mangrove swamp.

Nestled between both forest and ocean, you get the best of both worlds at Berjaya Langkawi Resort – even the monkeys love it there!

5. You’ll fall in love with the views at this resort! – The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort, Langkawi

Their Rainforest Cooking Classes for instance let you explore the secrets of great Malay cuisine and the precision of sushi-making.

And if you’re a serious spa junkie, book yourself a pampering session at V Botanical Spa where you get to swoon away at their open-air pavilions overlooking the picturesque Datai Bay – a treat for your senses!

6. You’ve probably never swum in a pool bigger than this one! – The Danna Langkawi

I don’t know about you, but personally I have ultimate #poolgoals and after stumbling upon The Danna Langkawi, I can surely tell you that the pool of my dreams looks very similar to theirs! I mean, this is what I call a palatial pool; the dream of every couple out there as you don’t have to deal with kids being too close to you!

If you’re coming from the airport, you’ll reach the 5-star luxury resort within a short 15-minute drive. It is also conveniently located close enough to Langkawi’s iconic attractions like the cable car and skybridge.

Surrounded by pristine nature and beaches, The Danna offers escapism in a seashell. It is perfectly tucked away from the crowd of busy Cenang Beach and your days here will likely be spent lounging on talcum-white sands, swooning away at the spa while enjoying views of the marina, but I can also assure you that you’ll be spending plenty of time in the tempting pool or the crystal-clear waters of Langkawi!

There are uber-modern rooms, suites and villas catering to a wide range of budget and elevated dining experiences that are enough to play heaven with your senses!

7. Go a little closer to Thailand – Tanjung Rhu Resort

Not only is Tanjung Rhu Resort close to the Land of Smiles (Thailand), thanks to the Andaman Sea, but the surrounding scenery also transports you away from Malaysia with beautiful jungle-covered limestones popping out of the ocean!

The inner island-girl in me believes that one should at least give a chance to a beachfront honeymoon, plus it’s the ultimate occasion to don your sexy swimsuit too and what better place than to do so at Tanjung Rhu Resort?

Former guests absolutely love the staff hospitality, top-notch facilities, laid-back vibes and food offerings at the resort, and reading through reviews, I was pretty convinced that it would be the place I’d go next when in Langkawi!

There’s no shortage of perfect panorama at the resort and we’ve heard that you can even walk to the middle of the ocean when the tide is low. When it comes to catering to honeymooners, Tanjung Rhu Resort features two pools, of which one is adults-only!

8. Check into a hidden sanctuary – The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa

One of Langkawi’s most stunning boltholes to get swept off your feet to is The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa – located in Kuah, this is the perfect location to explore and experience the real Langkawi, or to hide out in seclusion instead.

To add, the hotel offers some of the best views you can ever get around the island. Don’t even get me started about sunset time here as it seems like it is simply gorgeously blessed by Mother Nature, with views straight out to the Andaman sea – it is no wonder that many come here to say “I do”!

The sprawling property sits on an expansive green garden, offers five dining venues and a heavenly spa to escape to whenever needed.

And while there’s a room category for everyone out there (even big families), we absolutely fall for their beachfront one-bedroom villa which features a private pool.

Once ready to leave your cocoon, go and explore the surroundings of Eagle Square or get on a boat from the nearby jetty for fun adventures on the water! The hotel also offers a bunch of activities for the restless out there!

9. A luxury beach resort in a UNESCO geopark – Four Seasons Resort Langkawi

Known as one of the world’s leading luxury hotel chains, you can only have high expectations when booking yourself a stay at a Four Seasons Resort and their Langkawi property isn’t ready to disappoint!

Set foot in a place where you’ll feel like you’ve been completely cut off from the real world,but in a good way. The resort sits on the north coast of Langkawi right within a UNESCO World Geopark, far from the action of the beaches down south. In fact, by the looks of it, you won’t even believe you’re in Langkawi, let alone Malaysia!

Days at the Four Seasons Resort Langkawi are about everything you’ve ever dreamed of – the best mornings are spent at the beach or with a dip in the pool, followed by a beautiful breakfast spread at Serai, their beachfront dining venue that offers uninterrupted views of the Andaman Sea.

Later throughout the day, sign up for their exciting explorations – the mangrove tour is one of past guests’ favourites!

Make some time to soak in all the beauty of the surroundings; tuck yourself into one of their beach hammocks before enjoying a curated spa experience for the both of you. Their signature treatment is known as Raja and Ratu (King and Queen) – an award-winning couple ritual which even includes a traditional blessing ceremony!

10. One with lagoon-access rooms so you can jump from bed to pool – Camar Resort

While we adore heading down (or up) to the pool to meet other fellow travellers on vacation, there’s something so satisfying in simply taking a few steps from your hotel bed to jump right into the pool.

I mean, what’s better than sleeping only a few steps away from the pool? Well, at Camar Resort you can choose between the privacy of their Beach Wing or the lively vibe of their Pool Wing, so there’s truly something for everyone!

And, by the way, Camar Resort’s salt water pool is known to be the longest one in Langkawi (we can’t testify but this sounds pretty tempting, isn’t it?).

Set on Pantai Tengah (an upscale beach area in Langkawi), you can be sure that you won’t miss out on any comfort. The resort features a total of four food and beverage outlets, including a pool bar and a beachfront restaurant from which we’ve heard you can spot on sunrise at breakfast and at lunch and dinner time it serves up some pretty good Malaysian and International delicacies which many referred to as being “reasonably priced”.

11. Find Mediterranean charm right in Langkawi! – Casa Del Mar Langkawi

Now, I am sure you’ve been waiting impatiently for that Cenang Beach option, so here it is! Afterall, that’s where everyone’s at when in Langkawi, right? Casa Del Mar brings you all that Mediterranean feels right here in Asia! Thinking about it, the name and architecture reminds me of the popular Cafe Del Mar beach club in Bali!

For first-timers out there, you got to know that Cenang Beach is THE place to be when in Langkawi – it’s the centre of action and has a lively atmosphere as the stretch is filled with restaurants, bars and hotels (similar to Patong Beach in Phuket or Double-Six in Bali).

However, that also means that you’ll have to be a little more cautious; there have been cases of robbery in hotel rooms but nothing too serious to worry about. Just make sure you carry all your belongings with you when you go out exploring.

Now coming to Casa Del Mar, what makes it special is the comfort it has on offer even though located on the busiest side of Langkawi. Often times, people associate Cenang Beach with wooden shacks, hostels and backpackers but then you get Casa Del Mar…

Their most romantic rooms are located on the ground floor; seaview or beachfront? The choice is yours. And while you’ll be spoiled with choices when it comes to dining options on Cenang Beach, the resort itself features some unique toes-in-the-sand dining experiences at La Luna, their beachfront restaurant from which you can bask in magnificent sunsets too!

And with the waters of Langkawi being protected from swells (thanks to the clusters of small islands surrounding the main island), it makes it an ideal destination for spending a relaxing day cruising, fishing, island hopping or taking your partner on a romantic Castaway Picnic on a deserted island beach (organised by Casa Del Mar itself).

12. Tropical rainforest or Andaman Sea? You get both here! – The Datai Langkawi

Your fellow neighbours at The Datai Langkawi include monkeys and geckos as the stunning resort is set in a pristine rainforest that’s over 10 million years old, all the while being guarded by majestic mountains and surrounded by a wealth of endemic flora and fauna.

From there, guests have direct access to the magical Datai Bay through the resort’s private footpath that leads to the beautiful stretch of white-sand beach.

Everything at The Datai seems centered around the natural environment, even their principles. And their team consists of naturalists and marine biologists who have curated unique experiences and activities to help you immerse in. To add, their on-site library invites you to learn and read about the natural world of Langkawi with a collection of years-old references.

You’ll find three main types of accommodation options at The Datai, of which we personally fall for The Rainforest Collection and The Beach Collection (can’t decide!).

Their jungle villas stand proudly on stilts above and near a stream that runs through the property, promising a true escape into nature while their beach villas sit directly on the pristine white-sand beach of Datai Bay with ancient rainforest as a backdrop – perfect if you’re seeking privacy and luxury (full butler service is provided).

And wait until you book yourself a pampering session. Their spa is not less impressive; it is located along a small winding stream surrounded by the rainforest and guarantees an awakening experience for your senses.

More than just a resort; The Datai Langkawi is an experience on its own!

Don’t mind being away from the beach and all the action? Then these options might steal your heart in a matter of seconds! We have a jungle retreat for Tarzan and Jane, a private pool villa for the Bali fans and a far flung resort located on a little pristine islet off the coast of mainland Langkawi for those who enjoy feeling stranded on a private island (I personally do)!
